Richard was born about 1198 in Codnor, Derbyshire, England.  Richard's father was Baron Henry De Grey and his mother was Isolda Bardolf.  His paternal grandparents were John de Grey and Elana de Clare; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Bardolf and Isabel de Condet. He had nine brothers and a sister, named Richard, John, Walter, Hugh, Hugh, William, John, Robert, Henry and Joan.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.  He died before September 8th, 1271.
