John was born about 1205 in Shirland, Derbyshire, England.  John's father was Baron Henry De Grey and his mother was Isolda Bardolf.  His paternal grandparents were John de Grey and Elana de Clare; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Bardolf and Isabel de Condet. He had nine brothers and a sister, named Richard, Richard, John, Walter, Hugh, Hugh, William, Robert, Henry and Joan.  He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.  He died in March 1265 in London, Middlesex, England.
