Her paternal grandparents were John Evans and Elizabeth McCurry; her maternal grandparents were Robert Bort McEwen and Rachel Hawkins. She had fourteen brothers and a sister, named Alexander Thomas, John Murroe, James Kirkham, William Henry, Robert, Greenbury Garrett, John, Hiram Martin, Isaac, Asbury, Wesley, Mathew Jones, Matthew Jones, Joseph M. and Margaret.
