Sir Gilbert the Red de was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England.  Sir Gilbert the Red de's father was Richard de Clare Earl of Gloucester & Hertford and his mother was Maude de Lacy Cts de Lincoln.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert de Clare Earl of Gloucester & Hertford and Isabella Marshal; his maternal grandparents were John de Lacy Earl of Lincoln and Margaret de Quincy. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Bogo, Benedict, Sir Thomas de Clare, Isabel, Margaret, Rohese (Agnes) and Eglentiria.  He died at the age of 56 on December 7th, 1299 in Monmouth Castle, England.
