Samuel was born on August 17th, 1807 in Barrington, Nova Scotia.  Samuel's father was Thomas Spinney and his mother was Sarah Dexter.  His paternal grandparents were John Spinney and Susan Snow. He had three sisters named Lavinia, Maria and Polly.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, John, Hiram, Sarah, Flavilla and Susanna.
