Maria was born on August 9th, 1809 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.  Maria's father was Thomas Spinney and her mother was Sarah Dexter.  Her paternal grandparents were John Spinney and Susan Snow. She had a brother and two sisters, named Samuel, Lavinia and Polly.  She was the third oldest of the four children. She had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, John, Hiram, Sarah, Flavilla and Susanna.
