John was born on April 17th, 1820 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.  John's father was Thomas Spinney and his mother was Margaret Coffin.  His paternal grandparents were John Spinney and Susan Snow. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Hiram, Sarah, Flavilla and Susanna.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Samuel, Lavinia, Maria and Polly.
