Sarah was born on April 14th, 1818 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.  Sarah's father was Thomas Spinney and her mother was Margaret Coffin.  Her paternal grandparents were John Spinney and Susan Snow. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Hiram, Flavilla and Susanna.  She was the second oldest of the six children. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Samuel, Lavinia, Maria and Polly.
