Joshua was born on May 21st, 1867 in Harmony, Queens County, Nova Scotia.  Joshua's father was Austin Welton Spinney and his mother was Elizabeth Jane Morse.  His paternal grandparents were Jacob Beach Spinney and Ann G. Crocker; his maternal grandfather is Jonathan Morse and his maternal grandmother was Elizabeth (Eliza) Spinney. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Jacob, Jonathan, Austin, Caleb, Elizabeth, Ann, Charlotte, Zilpha, Minnie, Eunice and Ida.  He was the eleventh oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 11 on December 21st, 1878 in Harmony, Queens County, Nova Scotia.
