Austin was born in October 1858 in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Austin's father was Austin Welton Spinney and his mother was Elizabeth Jane Morse.  His paternal grandparents were Jacob Beach Spinney and Ann G. Crocker; his maternal grandfather is Jonathan Morse and his maternal grandmother was Elizabeth (Eliza) Spinney. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Jacob, Jonathan, Caleb, Joshua, Elizabeth, Ann, Charlotte, Zilpha, Minnie, Eunice and Ida.  He was the eighth oldest of the twelve children.  He died after 1920 in Massachusetts.
