Joseph was born in June 1750 in St Stephen in Brannel, Cornwall and his baptism took place there on June 4th, 1750.  Joseph's father was Ralph Vivian and his mother was Sarah Vercoe.  His paternal grandparents were William Vivian and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Nicholas, Ralph, Joseph, Joan and Ann.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had two half-sisters named Jane and Frances.
