Joan was born in November 1734 in St Stephen in Brannel, Cornwall and her baptism took place there on November 30th, 1734.  Joan's father was Ralph Vivian and her mother was Sarah Vercoe.  Her paternal grandparents were William Vivian and <Unknown>. She had four brothers and a sister, named Nicholas, Ralph, Joseph, Joseph and Ann.  She was the oldest of the six children. She had two half-sisters named Jane and Frances.
