Thomas was born in 1830 in Durham and his christening took place on February 5th, 1830 in Barnard Castle, Durham.1   Thomas' father was Robert Howson and his mother was Mary Vasey.  His paternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, Joseph, George and Martha.  He was the oldest of the five children.
