Joseph was born in 1834 in Barnard Castle, Durham and his baptism took place there on May 4th, 1834.  Joseph's father was Robert Howson and his mother was Mary Vasey.  His paternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, John, George and Martha.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
