Martha was born in 1836 in Barnard Castle, Durham and her baptism took place there on February 19th, 1836.  Martha's father was Robert Howson and her mother was Mary Vasey.  Her paternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. She had four brothers named Thomas, John, Joseph and George.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
