John was born in 1832 in Barnard Castle, Durham and his baptism took place there on March 16th, 1832.  John's father was Robert Howson and his mother was Mary Vasey.  His paternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Joseph, George and Martha.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
