George was born in 1840 in Barnard Castle, Durham.1   George's father was Robert Howson and his mother was Mary Vasey.  His paternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, John, Joseph and Martha.  He was the youngest of the five children.
