William was born on March 22nd, 1830 in Cummingston, Morayshire, Scotland.  William's father was Alexander Anderson and his mother was Margaret McIntyre.  His paternal grandparents were William Anderson and Marjory Adam; his maternal grandparents were Donald (Hugh) McIntyre and Elspet James. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Hugh, Alex, Alexander, Robert, James, David, Marjory and Elspet.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
