Elspet was born on September 15th, 1839 in Drainie, Lossiemouth, Morayshire, Scotland and her baptism took place on September 22nd, 1839.1   Elspet's father was Alexander Anderson and her mother was Margaret McIntyre.  Her paternal grandparents were William Anderson and Marjory Adam; her maternal grandparents were Donald (Hugh) McIntyre and Elspet James. She had seven brothers and a sister, named William, Hugh, Alex, Alexander, Robert, James, David and Marjory.  She was the sixth oldest of the nine children.
