Daniel was born on February 1st, 1853. Daniel's father was Johann (Frederick) Friedrich Gerholdt and his mother was Elanor (Ellen) Drake (Droke?). His paternal grandparents were Johann Gottlob Joachim Goerhold and Marie Elisabeth Sandnerin. He had six brothers and four sisters, named John David, Jacob B, Charles, Peter D, George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Katharine (Catherine?) Wilhelmina, Elisabeth, Rebecca and Susenna (Susan).
