His paternal grandparents are Johann Joachim Goerhold and Susanne Judith Westphalin; his maternal grandparents are Johann Michael Sander and Christine Elizabeth Schutzen. He had two brothers and a sister, named Johann Carl Michael (Charles Michael), Wilhelm (William) and Minnie. He was the oldest of the four children.
