His paternal grandparents are Johann Joachim Goerhold and Susanne Judith Westphalin; his maternal grandparents are Johann Michael Sander and Christine Elizabeth Schutzen. He had two brothers and a sister, named Johann (Frederick) Friedrich, Johann Carl Michael (Charles Michael) and Minnie. He was the youngest of the four children.
