James was born in 1876 in Tweed River.1  James' father was William McLeod and his mother was Hannah McLennan.  His paternal grandparents were John McLeod and Christina McDonald; his maternal grandparents were Farquhar McLennan and Janet McKenzie. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Farquhar, John, Alexander, William, Kenneth, Christina, Christina and Kitty.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 87 in 1963 in Brisbane, Queensland.2
