Mary Jane was born on October 30th, 1872 and her baptism took place on November 8th, 1872 at Ballintubber.  Her godfather was Timothy Larkin. Mary Jane's father was John Flanagan and her mother was Honora Larkin.  Her paternal grandparents were Patrick Flanagan and Mary Byrne; her maternal grandparents were James Larkin and Mary Garvey. She had four brothers and six sisters, named Patrick, James, Ned, Michael Joseph, Eleanora, Catherine, Susan, Bedelia, Honoria and Teresa.  She was the oldest of the eleven children.
