Richard was born in 1222. Richard's father was Gilbert de Clare (5th Earl of Gloucester) and his mother was Isabel Marshal (m2. Richard, 1st Earl of Cornwall). His paternal grandparents were Richard de Clare (3rd Earl of Hertford) and Amice FitzWilliam; his maternal grandparents were William Marshall (1st Earl of Pembroke) and Isabel de Clare. He had a sister named Isabel. He was the older of the two known children. He died at the age of 40 in 1262.General Notes
