Margaret's father was Albert Edward Stanway and her mother was Ann (Annie) Jane Brereton. Her maternal grandparents were Charles Brereton and Mary Vaughan. She had three brothers and a sister, named George, Charles, James and Harriet. She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
