Richard was born in 1856 in Middleton and his baptism took place on February 15th, 1857 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1 2  Richard's father was Moses Mather and his mother was Lydia Lancashire.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Sarah (Sally) Stewart. He had three sisters named Sarah, Margaret and Lydia.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 48 in March 1904 in Middleton.3
