Older brother Isaac was baptised at Ridgway Gates in 1810. The Bolton Library baptism records for Ridgway Gates finish at 1814, and the only other records for there which have been deposited are burials records. The only John Mather I can find a baptism for is 21 Jun 1816 at Walmsley (St. Mary, Turton) a son of Samuel Mather and Alice Greenhough Mather, which is another John Mather.
For John to be a minor (under 21) when he married Ellen, he was born after 9 Oct 1816

Death Notes
Elizabeth was a widow by 1871 census
John Mather died 21st March 1865, while living at 114 Chroley Street, of Chronic Hepatic disease (liver disease), and Icterus (now called jaundice) - 3 weeks. He was only aged 49 at time of death.
Joseph Mather (his son), was present at the death, who was also living at 114 Chorley Street, Little Bolton.

The grave records dated 1873 are in the Inman/Foot family. The grave was bought originally for £2 by Elizabeth in 1865 and is in Tonge and Haulgh cemetery (at the back of where Fred Dibnah used to live) Ref - 2:F:29NC There are 3 inmates buried as follows:

There is no tombstone but we think it is next to the grave bought by John's brother George also in 1865 when his first wife died.
The epitaph from the tombstone is matriarch Alice Mather, Samuel’s widow, is buried here as well as George and family.
The funeral service was conducted by T.W. Handford, who was daughter Sarah Alice's brother-in-law. Grave 2.F.29

General Notes
John and Ellen are my 2x Great Grandparents. I.e. John is my great great grandfather. John was a baptist, and probably attended Moor Street Chapel, although he later married Elizabeth Kay at Dukes Alley Chapel.
9 Oct 1837, John, a spinner, and Ellen were living in Halliwell when they married at St Mary's, Deane.
After he married Ellen, he stayed at their family home at Crook Street (1838 when Benjamin born and 1843 when wife Ellen died), although his family house was at Blackburn Street.
In 1841, John (25) was living with Ellen (20) and son Joseph (1) at Blackburn Street, Little Bolton (not with parents), working as a Cotton Spinner. Charlotte Mather (unrelated?) was also in the same street.
20 Sep 1843, John was living at Coopers Square, Little Bolton (on Wedding certificate). The Bolton Cronical reported John Mather of Little Bolton marrying Miss Elizabeth Kay of Halliwell.
Between 1844 and 1854, John and Elizbeth had 6 more children, all registered at Little Bolton. Elizabeth Mather registered in 1841 is another family (Joshua Mather and Elizabeth Kay) also in Little Bolton.
In 1851, John was living at 58 Chorley St., Bolton (a labourer at the Iron Works, age 35) with new wife Elizabeth (32) and son Joseph (11), Hannah (6), Samuel (4), Margaret (2) and Sarah A (8mo)
Samuel Mather confirmed as father on marriage certificate. Making a fair assumption that Isaac Mather (the only other Mather family living in Little Bolton in 1851) is a brother. Isaacs father is also known to be Samuel.
In 1856, John was a witness to younger brother George's marriage to Mary Marsh. Both could sign their names.
In 1861, John and Elizabeth (45 and 43) are at 114 Chorley Street with their children Joseph (21), Hannah (16), Samuel (14), Margaret (12), Sarah (10), John (8) and Ruth (6).
In 1864, John of 114 Chorley Street died.

Recorded as "Time Keeper" and "Bleech Works" appears to have been added later, possibly in error as at "Iron Foundary" on later records.
From before September 1837 to September 1842 John's occupation was Cotton Spinner in manufacturing at Blackburn Street.5From 1851 his occupation was Labourer in manufacturing for Iron Works, in Little Bolton.6From before September 1842 to September 1843 his occupation was Oil Sheet Maker at Coopers Square.5From after September 1843 his occupation was Shopkeeper in sales in Halliwell.7From before 1861 his occupation was Time Keeper in manufacturing for Iron Foundry, in Bolton. He died on March 21st, 1865 while still employed there.8From 1861 his occupation was Time Keeper for Bleach Works, in Little Bolton.1

Happy Mather was recorded at Blackburn Street, Little Bolton in the 1811 L.B. Poor Rates Book, so presumably James had just died when Happy got recorded (as head of household). Home of John Mather, Ellen and Son Joseph in 1841.

Cornelius Buckley was recorded as living here in 1838 when he married Esther Scowcroft.
John Mather recorded Crook St as his address in 1838 when his son Benjamin was born and again in 1842 when his wife Ellen (John and Mary's daughter) died.
By 1851, except for Mary, their children had left home and they had 9 lodgers and visitors to fill what must have been a big house.
