  The Marriage Banns confirm that Alice is from the Parish of St Peter, Bolton and already a Mather before she married Samuel.

  Born about 1789 (age 72), Turton, according to 1861 census.

  Born about 1788 (age 91) in 1879, headstone and Death Cert.
  
  It's therefore reasonable to assume Alice was born between 1787 and 1792.  One record from Bolton or Turton is at Walmsley.  See image for further details.

  Another possibility is Alice, D of John and Nancy of G.B., bap 1786 or Alice from Westhaughton born 1785
  
  

• Death Notes

  By 1861 and 1871, Alice was a widow and living with her daughter, Happy and family.  She died after 1871 census and before 1881, probably while she was living with her daughter, Happy Shuttleworth.

  For the last 20+ years of her life she recorded her birth as about 3 years older (i.e. 1789, not 26-Mar-1792), so its not surprising that this age is also 3 or 4 years out.
  
  Alice Mather died in Bolton on 16th November 1879 at 5 Nell Street, Bolton (she was living here with Phineas, Happy and Jesse Collins) and her certified cause of death was Natural Decay.  Her death was registered by her son Samuel Mather who was in attendance at the death and who also lived in Nell Street (probably No. 9)
  
  She is buried with her son George and his family. The headstone records her death as Nov 16th 1879.

• Marriage/Union Notes

  The Marriage Banns were recorded on 15 July 1810 - see pictures for image.
  
  The marriage is the Bolton Parish Church of St. Peter.  The marriage, entry number 252, was on 09 September 1810 by banns.  The information therein states that Samuel was a weaver and of the parish of Bolton-Le-Moors, and he married Alice Mather, a spinster of the same parish.  The marriage was conducted by Thomas McDougal, a curate serving at the church at that time.  Both Samuel and Alice were illiterate and made their marks.  Their witnesses unfortunately were William and James Orrell, who were church wardens and witnessed all of the marriages on that page.

• Family Notes

  Isaac likely older brother as only other Mather family living in Little Bolton in 1851, and baptism record confirms parents.
  John's parents Samuel and Alice, confirmed by birth certificate. Happy and George confirmed by census records.
  
  Was Samuel Mather married twice?  No - They are different families.  FamilySearch.org.uk has two marriages of Samuel Mather, both to an Alice.
  Also the age gap between Isaac, born Bolton and the others, and common sons show they must be different families., ours from Little Bolton and the other from Bury.
  
  There are also christening records at Mancherser Cathederal (and Collegiate Church) for a Samuel and Alice Family.  They have Ellen (17-Apr-1808), William (30-Dec-1810), Alice (21-Feb-1819) and Alice (29-Sep-1822) but this must be another family if Isaac is correct (baptised 11 Jan 1811).
