Frank was born in 1895 in Rumworth.1  Frank's father was James Howcroft and his mother was Hannah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Gerrard. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Albert, Herbert, Wilfred, Fred, Elizabeth and Clara.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
