Elizabeth was born in 1897 in Bolton.1  Elizabeth's father was James Howcroft and her mother was Hannah Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Gerrard. She had five brothers and a sister, named Albert, Herbert, Wilfred, Fred, Frank and Clara.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
