John's father was Dionysius (Dennis) Howarth and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Crook.  His paternal grandparents were John Howarth and Silence  Duckworth. He had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Henry, Sally, Silence, Betty, Jane and Mary.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
