Betty's father was Dionysius (Dennis) Howarth and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Crook.  Her paternal grandparents were John Howarth and Silence  Duckworth. She had three brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Henry, Sally, Silence, Jane and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
