John was born on March 4th, 1790 in Harwood and his baptism took place on April 4th, 1790 at St. Bartholomew (Great Harwood) conducted by minister B Willock.1  John's father was Henry Howarth and his mother was Ann Dugdal. He had a brother and five sisters, named Jonathan, Ann, Alice, Jane, Mary and Betty.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
