Gilbert was born in 1902 in Bolton.1  Gilbert's father was Gilbert Smith Haydock and his mother was Edith Aspinall.  His maternal grandparents were John Aspinall and Mary Welsby. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Edith.  He was the youngest of the three known children.  He died as a war casualty at the age of 18 on December 1st, 1920.2
