Edith was born in March 1898 in Bolton.1  Edith's father was Gilbert Smith Haydock and her mother was Edith Aspinall.  Her maternal grandparents were John Aspinall and Mary Welsby. She had two brothers named John and Gilbert.  She was the second oldest of the three known children.
