Mary was born in June 1848 in Bolton and her baptism took place on June 18th, 1848 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Mary's father was Walter Welsby and her mother was Maria Bolton.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Bolton and Mary Whitaker. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Josiah, Thomas, Elizabeth, Ann and Ann.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
