Samuel's father was Jethro Hamer and his mother was Martha Jane Mather. His maternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Jane Scowcroft. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Walter, Jethro, Edward, Jethro, Sarah, Ada, Alice, Rachel, Florence and Ethel. He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 1 in March 1873 in Bury. His burial was on March 25th, 1873 at All Saints (Elton).²
