May was born in September 1897 in Birkenhead and her baptism took place there on October 6th, 1897.1 2  May's father was John Brereton and her mother was Eliza (Lizzie) Batho.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Brereton and Esther Eddowes; her maternal grandparents were George Batho and Elizabeth Kirkham. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, George, Bill, Ada, Florrie and Ettie.  She was the youngest of the seven children.  She died whilst giving birth, Giving birth to Ada, at the age of 35 in June 1933 in the Wirral.3
