Henry was born in March 1852 in Manchester.¹

Henry's father was Andrew Bentley and his mother was Jenny (Jane) Mather. His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Rachel Hamer. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Andrew, James, Ellen, Ann, Jane and Alice. He was the third oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named Abel.
