Rachel was born on March 6th, 1788 in Entwistle and her baptism took place in March 1788 at Walmsley Presbyterian conducted by John Taylor.1 2  Rachel's father was John Hamer and her mother was Mary (Mally) Bury. She had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Benjamin, Ann, Alice, Sally, Betty, Nancy and Jenny.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  She died after 1865 in Edgworth.

‌Rachel and James were married in a religious ceremony on October 12th, 1807 at St. Peter's (Bolton).3  They had six sons and five daughters, named James, John, Charles, Isaac, Andrew, Andrew, Ann, Nancy, Jane, Sarah and Maria.  There are no more children.
