Mary was born in March 1801 in Malpas and her baptism took place on March 27th, 1801 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).1  Mary's father was George Batarbee and her mother was Mary Richards.  Her paternal grandparents were John Batterbury and Elizabeth Kempster; her maternal grandparents were Richard Richards and Anne Phythian. She had three brothers and a sister, named George, Richard, Thomas and Anne.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
