John was born on November 29th, 1798 in Rhinebeck, Dutchess, NY, USA.  John's father was Elias Freer and his mother was Mary Van Kleeck.  His paternal grandparents were Simeon Freer and Catrina Van Benschoten; his maternal grandmother was Jannetje DeGraff.  He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Lawrence, Moses, Jannetje, Jane, Catherine, Sarah, Maria, Elizabeth and Alida.  He is the nineth oldest of the ten children.
