William was born in 1759 in North Thoresby, Lincoln, England and his christening took place there on September 19th, 1759.  William's father was John Rack and his mother was Sarah Ling. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John, Thomas, Gervais, Ann, Frances, Hannah, Rack, Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
