Douglas was born on July 8th, 1898 in Rawalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan.  Douglas' father was Mr Edward John Coventry Master and his mother was Mrs Lydia Florence Blanche Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Mr Robert Augustus Master and Mrs Marianne Kennedy. He had a brother and two sisters, named Eric, Dorothy and Irene.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Gerard, Kennedy and Ellen.
