William was born in 1776 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on October 14th, 1776.  William's father was Mr George Gibson and his mother was Mrs Christian Arthur.  His paternal grandparents were Mr James Gibson and Mrs Jean Cuming. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Robert, George, John, Margaret, Christian, Jean and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
