James was born in 1757 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on May 30th, 1757.  James' father was Mr George Gibson and his mother was Mrs Christian Arthur.  His paternal grandparents were Mr James Gibson and Mrs Jean Cuming. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, George, John, William, Margaret, Christian, Jean and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
