Elizabeth was born in 1770 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and her baptism took place there on October 14th, 1770.  Elizabeth's father was Mr George Gibson and her mother was Mrs Christian Arthur.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr James Gibson and Mrs Jean Cuming. She had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Robert, George, John, William, Margaret, Christian and Jean.  She was the third youngest of the nine children.
