Robert was born in 1759 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on June 8th, 1759.  Robert's father was Mr George Gibson and his mother was Mrs Christian Arthur.  His paternal grandparents were Mr James Gibson and Mrs Jean Cuming. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, George, John, William, Margaret, Christian, Jean and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 64 on February 6th, 1823 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
