Hugh was born on December 28th, 1869 in Fatehgarh, Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, India and his baptism took place there on February 17th, 1870.  Hugh's father was Mr John Barton Conroy and his mother was Mrs Caroline Campbell.  His maternal grandparents were Mr Robert Campbell and Mrs Anne NK. He had two half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Alice, Tamar, Emily, Mary and Ann.
